PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

The mill at Abercrombie Point is toxic. The emissions peel paint in nearby homes. The effluent kills marine life. For 50 years, Nova Scotians have been paying unfathomable sums of money to various billionaire owners, including a secretive $6 million payment to Northern Pulp last year. For 50 years, local residents, particularly those of Pictou Landing First Nation, have paid a heartbreaking human toll. Recently, UNIFOR released a statement that “Mill Jobs Matter.” As if tourism and fisheries jobs don’t. As if the human toll doesn’t. As if the cost of severance doesn’t pale in comparison to the cost of maintaining operation. You can read our counter statement here.
